A Sunday afternoon. The sky was as blue as the oceans it looked down upon and the sun glistened off anything it could get it's touch to. A perfect day for anyone to ignore the troubles of homework and to lay out in the sun. Mary McDonald was no exception. Except today was different for her. Today she was a new Mary. Her normal muggle pants were snipped up the night before by Lily, were it framed around her buttocks and ended shortly afterwards. Her small tank top pushed her chest up and in, leaving a very generous cleavage showing. Her stomach peeked out from the bottom of the shirt as well.
No one would notice that this was Mary. It couldn't be. She was a modest girl, not a skimpy slag. This wasn't Mary, however. This Mary was changed by past events. A Mary that not even her evil doers would notice. Mary had recieved the shove to change and that was exactly what she was doing. Except she was on the look-out for a specific person, someone that was very particular. Her eyes scanned the lawns. She was told he was here by multiple people and was told (again by multiple people) that she would easily catch his eyes.
There still was a hint of Mary underneath all the skin. Her heart seemed as though it was about to beat out of her chest. Her palms were ready to turn to liquid themselves. Mary wasn't sure how girls could wear these types of shorts, she was freezing, even with the sun beating on them. The small shirt wasn't something she liked either; it made her feel like someone would be able to see her chest if she moved the wrong way. The real Mary didn't like any of this, but it was completely necessary and she knew that. Lily had explained the whole look to her and even though Mary didn't like it, she knew what she was supposed to do.
Mary noted the many people staring at her. They probably didn't recognize the brunette. This was her final year at Hogwarts and people still didn't know her name. Mary was tempted to hang her head and hurrily find who she was looking for, but Lily's words rang in her head. Her eye twitched in what probably looked like a wink to the nearest boy and he winked straight back. Maybe Mary could really do this whole thing. Taking a deep breath, she spotted the dark haired boy and immediately let her feet do the walking.
Mary flipped her hair like Lily had shown her, nearly giving herself whiplash. Bad idea. She rubbed her neck, but still made sure that she was in his view. Mary had been blessed with a great body, one she had never shown off. At least that was what Lily had said last night. Mary sat herself on the ground as delicately as possible. She put her hands behind her back and balanced herself on them in her own attempt to look mildly attractive. Closing her eyes, she hoped that someone would just pick her up and bring her out of here, but no, she had to get the attention of Sirius Black and that was what she was going to do.

The sun was out and shining over the green lawns around Hogwarts. The chill of the start of term seemed to be fighting with the sun to win over the better parts of the weather and so far they were at a draw. Despite the sun being out to brighten the day, there was still a distinct English chill that swept through the lawns. Despite the slight chill many of the students were trying to soak up the last remnants of summer. They were so desperate to cling onto a time that was so carefree that it was not surprising that on that particular Sunday afternoon the lawns were packed with all sorts of people ready and willing to spend the day, no matter the cost, remembering the old summer ways of things.
A boy of seventeen, tall, broad, and still slightly tanned was in that boat. Though Sirius Black had always found Hogwarts to be a kind of home to him, he could not help but want to go back to summer. There were no restraints in summer. There were no rules or responsibilities, only the freedom of the day and the excitement of the night repeated steadily for two months. Sirius had had a summer to remember. He had spent it at the Potters after leaving his home. James’ parents had been brilliant to him and had treated him as if he was just another son. After two months of James and Sirius raging havoc amongst the village of Godric’s Hollow, however, it was time that the Potters got their well deserved break. If they could survive a house occupied by Padfoot and Prongs they had gotten as close heroics as any parent ever would.
“Come on Moony,” Sirius said as he threw one of James’ old quaffles over to the spectacled Headboy, “It would be loads of fun!”
”Yeah mate, loosen up a bit will yeah?” called James as he tossed the quaffle back at Sirius.
Sirius caught it and let out a laugh at the thought. Remus Lupin, who had been sitting by a tree beside the two boys scarcely looked up from the book he was reading. He flicked a page and then sighed.
”I am not going to go up to Dorcas Meadowes and tell her the summer’s been good to her chest,” he snapped, slightly annoyed but not surprised.
Sirius threw the quaffle back at James and turned over to where Dorcas Meadowes was sitting with a group of Gryffindor girls. He pushed his hair from his face and put a hand on his hip as he looked her over from afar, “ You know, I think she’d take it well—Maybe it even get you a date. Load of girls like that kind of attent—“
It was then that Sirius became distracted. His eyes had locked onto a new comer to the lawns. Her long dark hair moved carelessly in the breeze, her hips swaying almost invitingly as she walked. Her barely there short shorts showed off her toned legs and her scantily clad top gave little to the imagination---wait a second was that Mary Macdonald?
”OI! PADFOOT!” called James and Sirius only had a split second to react as the quaffle came spinning towards his head.
He caught it but not before it could make contact with the side of his head. He looked over at James and then back to Mary.
“Sorry lads, I’ll be right back,” he said slickly as he put the quaffle under his arm and sauntered over to where Mary was sitting by herself.
Mary had never really be on Sirius’ radar. Sure, they were in the same house and the same year and had the occasional run in but he never thought much of it. She was the quiet girl who liked to hang around Evans; two things Sirius tried to avoid. He liked people who matched his intensity and by all accounts Mary had never been the first to throw a ragger of a party and get a bit crazy. She was a perfectly sweet girl and he liked her all the same but this, this was a completely new Mary that Sirius never saw coming.
He had an air of confidence about him that drew people in. Even if he had never had the ambition or passion for sports he pulled off the sporty look all too well. He put his free hand through his hair and approached her.
“Hey Macdonald,” he said with one of his classic Sirius Black smiles, “ Nice legs,”
He wondered what her reaction would be. Usually he would assume she would mumble a sweet and gentle response but by the current state of things he had to throw all preconceived notions out of the way because this was in no way the Mary Macdonald he had come to know over their years at Hogwarts.

Mary felt the multiple eyes on her. Even with her eyes shut, the saying "they can't see me if I can't see them" didn't help her one bit. She felt her face burning with embarrassment. This was a horrible idea for shy little Mary Macdonald. She would never be caught dead in shorts that short or a shirt that small. Was this Lily's back when she was a first year or something? Mary wanted to tug on the shirt to cover her stomach, but curved her fingers into her palm to prevent this. This was something that had to be seen to get attention.
Using common sense, it had to work. Sirius Black was an egotistical man whore. Which meant that anything that looked half way decent would get his attention. Mary would never be sure about herself, but hopefully Lily would be right; hopefully the small shirt and short shorts showed off enough assets that Sirius Black would be over in maybe just a few minutes. As time rolled on, she had to admit that she didn't think she would get the boys attention. Horrible, horrible idea. Mary went to get up, when a shadow blocked the sun from her.
“ Nice legs,”
Immediately, Mary tensed up. The words he had said to her earlier that week rang in her head, but she bit her tongue and kept her eyes shut, as though him being there didn't bother. The pick up line was all too 'Sirius Black', something Mary had heard multiple times. Normally, she would studder a response and blush at his words, but this time, she tought out her response very carefully, making sure there wasn't too big of at time wait where Sirius just thought Mary had been confunded into everything she was doing.
With a deep sigh, Mary opened her eyes and eyed Sirius carefully. She raised her eyebrows at him, trying her best to look annoyed by his presense. "Right, sorry, these legs are actually closed, not used to that, are you?" Mary said, rolling her eyes and shutting them again, leaning back on her arms. She could feel her heart in her throat and she could feel her stomach beginning to churn. She was never rude, nor did she ever make sexual comments. She knew Lily would be proud of her.
Was it plausible that this was the new Mary? Probably not, but it was a new found confidence that she liked. He complimented her legs, something she was always afraid to show. People were staring at her, giving her attention that she found was avery tempting thing to keep. No, she probably wouldn't stay with the uncomfortable shirt that squeezed her chest into all different shapes, but showing off something every once in a while couldn't hurt. Attention was something Mary could definately get used to.

Sirius casually checked his fellow Gryffindor out. He didn’t even try to be subtle about it. From past experience Sirius had come to the conclusion that girls who dressed like that wanted to be looked at. Why should he hide the obvious? This was Mary Macdonald though, and she was never one to do this kind of thing. It helped that her eyes remained closed long enough for Sirius to do the once over---okay the twice over. Oh bloody hell he couldn’t stop doing the ‘once over’.
Mary was the shy girl with the morals of a saint. She did go to parties but he had always seen her as more of a wall flower than the center of attention diva. He had only really noticed her because she hung around Lily Evans so regularly, and Evans had always had an act for busting his balls for anything and everything under the sun. Hadn’t have been for Evans Sirius wouldn’t have taken a second glance at Mary. Actually, even then Sirius didn’t give Mary much of a second look. Sure, he was friendly with her and liked to joke about but there was never really that magnetism that drew him in. There was never that spark that made him think about a conversation they had had in the past. Mary was just Mary, simple as that...until now that is.
Sirius could tell there were more eyes on the pair than there should be. Perhaps it was the shock of seeing Mary in this state, or perhaps it was the pair of them in general. He could already tell Prongs and Moony were rolling their eyes on the other side of the lawn. He could tell the girls of his fan club were tensing up with him approaching another girl. It was all a bit scripted and yet all so completely farfetched it was a bit hard to believe.
The quaffle under his left arm sat casually on his hip as he looked down at her. Mary’s eyes fluttered open. Had she always had brown eyes? They seemed to have flecks of golden browns in them that Sirius had never really noticed before. The look within them was completely not the Mary Macdonald he was used to. She sighed and said something completely and utterly un-Mary like he had to shake his head slightly to know if he had heard her correctly.
"Right, sorry, these legs are actually closed, not used to that, are you?"
Sirius raised an eyebrow as he watched Mary shut her eyes once more and go back to her tanning as if he wasn’t even there. He shook his head and let out a slight chuckle. He hadn’t even heard that response when hitting up a girl let alone when that girl was Mary.
“Touché,” he said half impressed, “Though you’ll have to excuse my shock. I didn’t even know you had legs until now Macdonald. You’ve been holding out,”
He let out a laugh as he patted the quaffle under his arm. He wasn’t sure if she was going to snap at him again if he attempted to sit down so he thought it best to continue to stand there. His smooth smile hid the confusion he held on her behavior. She had a look of satisfaction on her face that was almost looked as if she were trying to hide it. He had never experienced the fiery comebacks coming from Mary, who usually liked to avoid confrontation and sink into the background. He remembered the train incident that happened a mere couple of weeks before. How could someone have changed so much over such a short period of time? Perhaps he had never noticed the transformation. He wanted to know what her angle was as it clearly didn’t sound like her, but at that very moment his hesitation was sidetracked by her appearance. Hey, he was a guy after all, and he couldn’t help himself. Mary was a looker, even if it took him six years to notice.
“So you think you can keep those legs of yours closed long enough for me to sit down?” he retorted back playfully. He was just joking about how he always did but for some reason he was unsure on how she would take it.

What was the definition of beauty? Was it someone who was confident in themselves? Was it someone who had the perfect looks? What was perfect, anyways? Everyone could find a different definition for perfection. Everyone probably did have a different definition of perfection. Therefore, could anyone be truely perfect? Could anyone be beautiful? Maybe in someone's eyes, the true Mary was beautiful. But to Sirius Black right now, this Mary had to be perfection in its finest form.
Mary felt filthy. She had never been looked at so much in her entire life, let alone in the time it had taken her to walk to the spot she was currently laying in. The eyes on her made her feel like things were sticking to her, like there was mud or something covering her entire body with every single set of eyes that glued themselves to her. She wanted a burning hot shower with a large bar of soap. Maybe she would bathe in her swimsuit to actually feel like she had more clothes on then she did now.
Mary could feel Sirius's eyes burning into every part of her body. She felt as though she were a piece of meat and Sirius was starving. She nearly pulled grass onto every inch of her legs in an attempt to cover them up, but resisted the urge. This was what she was supposed to be doing and it was working perfectly according to plan, but it felt so wrong. Maybe wrong was good. Maybe that's how it was supposed to feel. Was this how people who were like this regularly felt?
"I've been saving them for someone who can handle them. Seems you haven't been able to until now, Black." The words came off of Mary's tongue before she could bite them back. Would she have taken them back if she had the chance, though? The adrenaline pumping through her veins told her no, but her logic in her brain said yes. It may not have been something he was used to hearing (girls at Hogwarts always seemed to be a lot more forward), but it was a safe middle ground for Mary Macdonald. At least as safe as she could be with a mental Lily on her shoulder.
She could see Sirius's legs trying to bring himself down to the ground, but the rest of him wouldn't let it happen. The quaffle was tucked neatly under his arm, but Mary knew he didn't even play. He just liked to show off. Sirius Black was always one to show off and to belittle those around him. Mary felt her face flush again at the memory, but pushed it away. She felt her blood boil and remembered why she was doing this. Mary flipped her hair over her shoulder, revealing her bare neck that seemed to curve straight down to her cleavage line. Play it out like Lily told you Mary told herself.
Mary lifted one of her legs over the other, running her fingers over the smooth tanned surface of them. Pursing her lips, she looked up at Sirius as though deep in thought. "You have nothing to worry about, Black." Mary said, a small smirk playing on her lips as she let her eyes obviously wander down his body without any bit of shame. "My grandpa's a fishermen and he taught me a great lesson. Throw the small ones back." Mary's eyes lingered for a second before leaning back, her eyes shut once more. Satisfied, but definately in need of a long bathing.

Having a reputation, especially in high school, could shape a person in more ways than one. Not only was everything seemingly magnetized within a school setting, but thing tended to be blown up out of nothing as well. The funny thing was most students wanted to be talked about, at least a bit. It meant you were relevant, which was all anyone ever wanted to be when they were teenagers. Sirius Black didn’t have to try hard to gain the reputation he had. He was himself and was comfortable in that but at the same time he held a certain importance on what people thought of him. He was the Gryffindor ladies man with a bit of a wild streak. How could there be anything bad with that? Sure some people turned those labels in a more negative light but Sirius didn’t mind as he knew half of the people who called him a man whore either wanted to be with him or be like him on some kind of level. He knew he wasn’t liked by all but he was liked by enough people to have the position he did. He really didn’t care what people thought of him, but apparently people cared a lot about their opinions on him. Being well known or popular was a bit like being in a snow globe of sorts. Everyone could look in at you and no matter what you did you really couldn’t get out of the circle. To be blunt, Sirius was a popular guy and no matter what he did people were going to talk.
He stood there looking at Mary who had never really been the girl that everyone looked at. Sure, she was not the most exciting person in the gossip circles but she was in no way one of those kids who spent all day every day in the library. She had clout, though it was nothing compared to the Marauders. Maybe Mary wanted to shake things up for her final year. The funny thing about reputations was that it was hard to attain one but once you had it could be changed with a single action. After this afternoon, Sirius had the feeling that Mary was going to be the talk of the school in a way she had never experienced before.
Sirius snorted a laugh at Mary’s comment, “Handle them? Oh, I could do more than that I can assure you,” he said rather suggestively.
Was he flirting with Mary Macdonald? Well, of course he was. There was no shock there, but what was shocking was that she was flirting back. Not only was she playing his game, from the sounds of things she was in it to win it. Sirius had to shake his head to collect himself. This was just way too strange but he wasn’t about to question it out loud. Again, Mary was far too distracting for him to do much else but stare.
He watched her as she methodically crossed her legs. It was as if she was one of those models in those naughty muggle magazines he had found under Peter’s bed in third year. She touched her leg absently as she spoke and Sirius felt a shiver go down his spine. She had his full attention now.
Sirius’ attention span when it came to girls was short lived to say the least. He found something he liked and before someone could bat an eye he was already on to the next one. He wasn’t a relationship guy and found he got bored too easily to stay with a girl too long. There had been a rumour going around last year that he had found a girl, dumped her, and went on to the new exchange student all before he had time for lunch. In his defense it had been dinner but who was he to correct the rumours? People were going to talk no matter what he did. He couldn’t add more fuel to the fire.
"You have nothing to worry about, Black. My grandpa's a fishermen and he taught me a great lesson. Throw the small ones back."
He raised an eyebrow at Mary, but took this as his cue to sit down. He took his place right across from Mary and placed James’ quaffle by his hip. Now face to face with her he could see the lines of her smirk in her face, the slight dimple she had in the corner of her mouth, and the particular shimmer in her eye that he had never taken the time to notice before.
“Well it’s a good thing you aren’t talking to Malfoy then,” he said with a laugh as he pushed his hair back out of habit.
He put his hand on Mary’s knee, unafraid and unyielding. He smiled at her and then placed his hand back on his lap casually as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened. He glanced back at Prongs and Moony momentarily but couldn’t hold his look for long as he found himself almost completely enthralled in the new and improved Mary Macdonald.
“So, whose the lucky guy you’re trying to impress with this new makeover?” he said looking back at her,.
He had to ask. He had found that girls did a lot of different things to their appearance for a number of different reasons but when the decided to do a complete 180, show some cleavage and get ready to look as if they may fit in on a street corner, everyone knew they weren’t just doing this for themselves. They wanted to get some notoriety and attention and usually that attention came in the form of a particular male.

If you tried to change who you were, did that mean you were a new person? If you still felt the same on the inside, were you still really the same person? This was the internal conflict that Mary had to deal with. Was she the new Mary that Sirius was talking to and finding himself enthrawled in? Or was she the same Mary, just wearing a mask? Mary would be willing to bet the second. She wasn't comfortable in this new skin, but it was necessary for now. Her logic even told her that.
Sirius Black loved girls. He loved things with two legs that could wrap themselves around him. He loved anything that could giggle and wear too much make up. He probably was so wrapped up in Mary that he didn't even bother to see past the fact that she would grimace when a breeze would brush on her bare legs or that she wouldn't stop biting her lip. It may have been looked at in some sexy way to Sirius, but if he would actually think, he'd see the true meaning behind it all. Maybe if he did, he'd see her motive for it all.
"Think you could handle all of this, Black? Willing to test that theory, then?" Mary said in a low voice, copying Sirius's small move and putting her hand on Siriu's leg. Except Mary put her hand extremely high up on Sirus's leg. Too far for Mary's comfort. She retracted her hand, feeling herself ready to vomit. This was extremely uncomfortable. What if he received an erection and expected Mary to do something about it? Mary was all talk, definately no action.
Mary cleared her throat, feeling as though her leg was on fire. She was ready to quit. She felt as though her butt would pop out of the shorts if she stood up too quickly. She had to pick every single move very carefully to make it look seductive. Even if she rubbed her nose, it'd look unattractive. Oh Merlin. Her nose itched. All Mary could do was twitch it slightly to keep the itch at ease. She was getting the reaction she had wanted out of Black. Everything was going smoothly. But what now?
“Well it’s a good thing you aren’t talking to Malfoy then,”
"Nice point...word around the school is that you are...gifted. Then again, I don't take sloppy seconds either." Mary added, letting a small laugh escape her lips. She knew the gossip, though she never spread it. She wouldn't say a word of what she heard from anyone. Until now. Maybe this was a new Mary. The words just seemed to fall off of her tongue before she could think too carefully on them. It seemed rather natural to do what she was doing. To flirt. Maybe this wasn't such a bad idea.
Mary had to think about his last question. Who was she trying to impress? The obvious answer was him. She was trying to grab his attention. Then again, with all the eyes on her, maybe she was trying to grab the attention of everyone around her. Was she trying to make everyone notice her, or was it just truely Lily's plan? "You want the truth, Black?" Mary said, bringing herself closer to Sirius, as though she were ready to tell him a secret. Which truely, she felt like she was. "It's you I'm trying to impress." The coolness of that particular Sunday was thrown off in looks. As the sun shone down on the grounds it gave the impression for those who were inside that summer was still upon them. The way the Black Lake glistened under the rays, or the way the grass moved slightly with the wind made it almost believable that summer was really fighting to stay. It wasn’t until one got out into the thick of things that they would realize that it was indeed a fleeting sun. Fall was upon the school no matter what the sun tried to do to mask it. In many ways the weather reflect that of Mary Macdonald, who at that very moment had Sirius Black caught in her web of lies.
The entire interaction with Mary had been one that was peculiar. If he wasn’t such a guy, Sirius would probably question it. Of course, he wasn’t going to do anything of the sort. He was Sirius Black after all and he had quite a reputation behind him. Girls that caught his attention did so with a rather unyielding ferocity. Though he would never become dependent upon a girl, when there was a girl of the moment he would treat them as if no one else was in the room. Perhaps that was why he had been able to get away with his womanizing ways for so long. He was able to hook a girl even after they had been kicked to the curb.
When she spoke in her new and improved sultry voice Sirius was again intrigued. Mary had never once shown an interest in him over the six previous years at Hogwarts. Sure, he could make her blush with a bat of his grey eyes but really he could do that to almost anyone. This was a completely different story and as Mary put her hand on Sirius’ thigh he knew it for certain. He looked at her, laughed, and then shook his head letting his hair fall on his face slightly with the movement. It was so casual and yet so elegant it was as if they could hear a collective sigh from his ever watching fan club.
“Oh I am willing,” he said looking at her once more. There was something in her eye and the way she retracted her hand that told Sirius she didn’t do this often, “The question is, are you?”
He watched her passively. Sirius would never say he was an expert in anything. He was far too young and far too distracted to devote the time needed to have such a title, but, he did consider himself to be rather learned in some social fields. He could read a person’s movements mostly because he had more interest and interaction with the human body than most. It did not, however, take a genius to realize Mary was growing uncomfortable. It was as if she was fighting with herself. She was half in it for the new Mary half fighting back the old one. It was strange because up until this point he had been a bit shell shocked by the new Mary. These glimpses of the Mary he knew were oddly comforting to him and he wasn’t particularly sure why.
"Nice point...word around the school is that you are...gifted. Then again, I don't take sloppy seconds either."
And with that Sirius was distracted once again. He had to let out a barking laugh at this remark, however. He lifted his head to the sky as he let her words sink in. She was a feisty one that was for sure and he had to admit he had never pegged her for it. He remembered the train incident at the beginning of the year once more. Wasn’t it Mary who sunk in with the compartment seating when things got a bit too intense?
“Well the word around school is you don’t take much of anything,” he shot back with a devilish grin. Two could play at her little game…actually Sirius was always one for a bit of mischief. Really, if anything, she was playing his game.
Sirius loved the chase. In many ways that was why he got as bored as he did once he had the girl. The allure of getting the girl was far more appealing than keeping her. To a guy like Sirius girls were a dime a dozen. He could pick one up as easily as glancing her way. But on most occasions he did not do so. He rarely, if ever, hooked up with a girl from his fan club for that was too easy. He liked the challenge and right at that moment Mary was indeed a challenge.
She moved closer to him as she spoke and Sirius did by no means mind. She was ready to up the ante on this day and Sirius was more than willing to oblige. With all the eyes on them Sirius felt the thrill of what was to happen next. Of course he did not show any of this. He kept a cool demeanor as always.
"It's you I'm trying to impress."
He smirked again. Really he had known the answer as soon as he asked it, although he wasn’t sure that she would be so upfront about it. The old Mary had a tendency of shying away at any forms of confrontation or revelation.
He smirked as he leaned in far closer than the old Mary would be comfortable with. His cheek was verging on touching her own as he moved around to her ear. His breath was hot on her ear as he spoke,
“Lucky me,”
He lingered there a moment before leaning back on his hands. He looked back at her wondering what she would do. He really needed to stop expecting things out of people because every time he did he ended up surprised. Mary was a wild card and he had never really given her much thought. He didn’t know if anyone around school gave her much of a thought either. One thing was for certain that all was about to change. It was as if he could hear the rumour mill already churning out the latest on the newly infamous Mary Macdonald.

Mary Macdonald felt filthy. She felt dirty from head to toe. She felt as though she had just run through mud with some hippogriffs or had jumped into the part of the Black Lake that not even the fish swam through. All the eyes on her made her feel as though grease was all over her body, that they were spreading it around. On normal circumstances, Mary would think something was on her face with all the people who were looking at her. Subconciously, she rubbed her cheek as though there were something there.
In a way, this was fun to Mary. She felt as though a weight was off of her shoulders. She didn't have to worry about if she said something too provacative (though she rarely did). She felt as though her hair were down for the first time and it felt good. Metaphorically speaking, she could finally feel the wind in her hair and could run her fingers through her locks without the need to straighten them out or the need to throw it up into a ponytail. For once, she was free of the reins.
Mary was a locked away and secluded person. She ignored gossip and ignored any type of banter people would try to start. Mary had always played it safe. She was a safe person in general. If something was too risky, she wouldn't do it. But on this warm/cool day, Mary felt dangerous. Looking at Sirius Black, knowing his full attention was on her made her feel as though she could do anything and no one could stop her. The adrenalin pumped through her as she smiled at Sirius and let out a laugh.
"Slow your roll there. I'm not that easy. You'd have to buy me dinner first. Then we could talk." Mary said easily. The words seem to flow off of her tongue as though they were comfortable there and in a way, they were. In another life, Mary was sure she was a social butterfly. She probably had multiple suitors. People like Sirius Black probably chased her around with roses. Maybe she could get him to do that in this lifetime. She smirked at the thought.
Mary's mind was going crazy with the possibilities that the "new Mary" held. She could do whatever and control whoever she wanted. She could make a reputation for herself, good or bad. She wouldn't just be Lily's best friend anymore, she'd be Mary. She'd have her own name and her own label. Good or bad, she'd have something that wasn't the nothing she had before. Mary let go and felt herself giving in to the temptations of the New Mary.
“Well the word around school is you don’t take much of anything"
"Ouch Black, that hurts a little. I just don't kiss and tell," Mary said with a wink. Mary was getting into this, even though she knew she shouldn't be. Sirius Black was a charming person, she could give him that, but when it came down to it, she still felt the same way about him after what he had said days ago. Lily had made the new mary and Mary would flaunt it to the best of her ability. At least to the best of her "new" ability, which seemed to be very good.
Mary brushed her hair away from her face and let out a care-free laugh. For once, she felt good. She may not have felt pure, but she felt amazing. "And what are you going to do with this new-found information, Mr. Black?" Mary asked and with a bat of her eyelids, she knew that Sirius was wrapped around her finger. He was falling for her words, for her look, and for the very movements she made. If this was bliss, she wasn't going to get much better.

Sirius ran his life by the moment. His emotions drove every action he did. He wore his heart on his sleeve and wasn’t afraid to speak his mind about anything. If he liked a person he would be sure to tell them and if he didn’t, well, he would let them know verbally or through one of his many pranks. There was no surprise that by this point in the game Sirius had a reputable following. One either loved him or hated him but either way they took notice of him. He could easily find comfort in the center of any circle as long as eyes were on him. Even if one hated everything Sirius said and did they made a point about noticing him and forming such a strong opinion. Therefore, there was no surprise to find that most people had stopped what they were doing on the lawns to not so subtly watch the interaction between Sirius and Mary.
He could tell Mary was not used to this kind of attention. By the end of the afternoon she would have a reputation around school, there would be rumours running ramped, and the attention would continue. It was funny how one small action could blow up as much as it did within the confines of Hogwarts School. Sirius knew that there would be a dating rumour churning through the school about the two and for that Mary probably would have to sleep with one eye open. The funny thing about Sirius is he never had a passive reaction to him. One either obsessively loved him or devoutly hated him.
“Hey now, who says you can’t buy me dinner,” he said mischievously, “ I wouldn’t want to be taken advantage of without at least having a full stomach.”
He laughed heartedly at his joke. He winked at her and thought of the idea. Sirius did not consider himself a romantic. He knew that most girls went crazy for that kind of thing but he felt that they were being cheated by the idea. No man in his right mind would cover an entire room with flower petals just because he ‘loved’ the girl. That was completely absurd, and quite frankly a bit too girly. A guy didn’t do those things because they cared for the girl. A guy did them because he knew he would be thanked in more ways than one later. It was a game of cat and mouse and girls were always too distracted by the pretty things to see it. Sirius talked a good game. He did everything right with girls and he treated them with respect and charm but his heart was never fully in it. It was for fun and his attention only went so far.
Mary again did not shy away from his upfront attitude. She came back with her own force and Sirius had to admit he was slightly impressed.
“You may not kiss and tell but believe me, others do,” he said as he leaned back on his arms that were hold him up off the grass, “I wouldn’t be surprised if you were ‘pregnant with my child’ by dinner.” He added, chuckling.
Rumours had a tendency of getting far too out of hand at Hogwarts. Even small truths one would tell to a friend could be overheard or completely contorted. In a sense it was true that the walls had ears at Hogwarts. Everyone had to be careful about what secrets they told because they would never stay secret for long.
"And what are you going to do with this new-found information, Mr. Black?"
Sirius thought for a second. He knew what he would do in any other situation…invite the girl back to his dorm. By all accounts the new Mary was willing but something stopped him. Perhaps it was because he could still see glimpses of the old Mary that always tagged along side his enemy Evans or perhaps it was because he was starting to believe this wasn’t all real. Either way he didn’t think Mary would actually follow through with the offer.
“Brag to all my mates,” he said cheekily, “Or maybe take you out to that dinner and try to return the favor.”
Perhaps this was the best way to go about it. Though she was very much the new Mary Sirius knew the transformation could have not been over night. The glimpses of her old self were hints to this as well. He didn’t want to scare her away for he was having a bit of fun talking to her.

To say all of this was foreign to Mary would be an understatement. She felt as though she were in a different country where not only did people speak a different language, they even looked different. She felt like she stuck out like a sore thumb. It wasn't just the eyes on her that made her feel this way, it was the strange looks she was getting. People barely recognized her. They probably didn't even believe this was Mary Macdonald. Mary herself wasn't sure this was her either.
Sirius was used to the eyes on him and the attention of whispers. He had gotten them since their first year when he had been sorted into Gryffindor instead of Slytherin. He always managed to brush it aside and smile it off. He handled things easily with a flick of his flowing black hair. To Mary, she wasn't sure if she'd be able to do that after this conversation. Even if people thought Mary was confunded or something along those lines, she would never be able to ignore the whispers that would spread that she had a thing for Sirius.
Mary already felt as though she were taking advantage of Sirius. She was minipulating him and bending him every which way for her own pleasure. Yet for once, it felt amazing. To say she held a grudge against the boy sitting in front of her was an understatement. She felt her blood boil whenever she thought of the conversation they had had earlier that week. "Darling, you can't take advantage of the willing." Mary said matter-of-factly, adding a smirk.
By the looks of it, Sirius was willing. The way he moved and the way he gave all of his attention to Mary made her feel kind of special. Finally, Mary felt as though she was a little attractive. Though it was all fake, she knew there was something attractive about her right now. It could've came from the way she looked or the way she talked, Mary would never be able to see it. Sadly, she would never be able to realize if she was beautiful or not. She was blind to her own beauty.
“You may not kiss and tell but believe me, others do,” he said as he leaned back on his arms that were hold him up off the grass, “I wouldn’t be surprised if you were ‘pregnant with my child’ by dinner.”
Mary glanced around the Lawns and saw people already whispering. Her jaw tightened immediately, knowing that she was the one they were whispering about. It was a new concept for her to handle, but she hid this, trying her hardest to brush it off as she let the sun hit her face at just the right angle and smiled up at it. "You'd find I can be pretty persuasive. By the looks of it, however, I've been pregnant with your child for quite some time." Mary said casually, gesturing over towards his so called "fan-club" who took to shooting Mary dirty looks.
Sirius's fan club never got to Mary. As Lily had proven, they were a lot of talk and no action. The worst they had done in the past was jinx whoever was dating Sirius or whoever had his attention. Mary quickly made a subconcious note as to where her wand was. Even though they were obsessed with Sirius Black, for some reason people tended to believe their stupid little rumors. Fortunately, rumors started by them were like a fire. It started up fast, but died down after not too long.
Sirius caught her off guard. She had braced herself for a perverted comment or an invitation to his pants. She hadn't expected an invitation to dinner, however. She paused, giving Sirius a very skeptical look. He was good with his words, as Lily had prepared her for. Was this his way of trying to get her into the bedroom? She had to stop and think, but before she had gotten so much as to analyze the situation, the new Mary spoke up. "I suppose I can grace you with my presence." Mary said, feeling as though she had sold her soul to the devil. Which in a way, she had.
