. Nighttime anywhere was usually presented in scary way. Mainly because it's hard to see what's happening, and every shadow one sees tends to resemble something frightening from one's childhood. It's like all the monsters in the world were set to come out and play when all was quiet and dark. This was also true for inside the castle of Hogwarts. Well, not exactly monsters. It was more true to say that the bad kids came out at night, and the Prefects and Heads hunted after them. Few got away with sneaking around, especially when the Heads were patrolling the corridors. There was only monster the students need worry about when he was on duty, and that was Lucius Abraxas Malfoy, a very angry and mean Slytherin Seventh Year who made it his goal to be startled by a member of another House and hex him or her. Yes, nights on duty were the best in his opinion.
He had already gotten two Gryffindors. They were the most likely to come out of hiding, and usually the most likely to get caught. Their bravery got them into a lot of trouble, especially with a Slytherin on watch. Probably the biggest rivals had come from those two Houses, although there were few members of other Houses that like anyone of that of the Snake. The two Gryffindors, though, were both male, and so Lucius had caught them together after knocking over some objects on the third floor and caused a raucous. There was no thrill of the chase there, because they knew they had been caught as soon as the first metal bowl had hit the floor. It was always a bore when they gave themselves up willingly, and it was even worse when it was a girl.
The biggest problem with Lucius being a point of authority is that he was corrupt. Boys could get away with nothing, unless they were part of his circle. A lot of the times he let Slytherins get away anyway so as to not have points deducted from their House. But girls were an easy target for bribery, as he liked girls and in the dark, everyone looks good, if you catch my drift. It wasn't always like that, but oftentimes it certainly was. Just another damn good reason to be a Prefect, and another good reason to be an incredibly handsome Malfoy. Had he been something unattractive such as James Potter or Sirius Black, he might not be successful in the bribes he received. Well, that was a lie when it came to Sirius. He was fairly popular for some odd reason. He didn't need the title of Prefect to get girls, although neither did Lucius. He just knew how to work it to his advantage.
Now he had made his way back downstairs toward the Slytherin Common Room. It was nearing the end of his shift, and it had been a very quiet night. He was ready to lie down and get some rest so he could be ready to torture more kids the next evening. The scariest place in the school was definitely the dungeons, and that's where he had found himself now. What with the torches dimly lighting the walls, every shadow looked like something out of a scary book. Lucius found himself stopping all too often, wand out and pointed, only to find the shadow was nothing more than just that. It wasn't until he was nearly at the end of his walk to the Common Rooms that he heard a noise and had to look over for it. The noise was promising, and so he began his search.

The dungeons were cold, dank, and had a certain smell to them that made you feel like you had just stepped into a swamp. Normally, people got used to the smell of the dungeons if they were a Slytherin. It may take you a few months from when you're first sorted, but the smell became pretty common. People from other houses who were in Potions always seemed to make some sort of comment to the smell, but the Slytherins ignored it. They were used to it by now.
If the Slytherin common room smelt so bad, did the others smell that bad as well? It didn't seem fair to keep the Slytherins with a smell in their nose all the time. Maybe the Hufflepuff common room smelt like rotten food; the Ravenclaw common room smelling like old books; the Gryffindor common room smelling like dirty gym socks. If other common rooms smelt like that, it seemed the Slytherins had it easy. Then again, the Slytherins always had it the easiest.
Tonight, however, the smell sunk into Lilith Rayne's delicate nose and left a stinging feeling. For the six years she had attended Hogwarts, the smell hadn't bothered her in a while. Tonight, it felt like the smell was particularly strong. Maybe it was the fact that she had just arrived back, but she had to get out of her bed. She knew it was late, far past curfew, but if she were to run into a prefect, she was incredibly good at talking her way out of detentions.
Immediately when she stepped out of the common room, she felt relieved. Though the smell still lingered, she felt as though she had saved her nostrils. She wrapped her cloak tighter around her small body and started towards the levels above her, in hopes of recieving some actual air, not anything that was beneath the Great Lake. Ever since she was younger, she never went into the Great Lake because she knew she'd come out smelling like the Slytherin Commonroom.
It was dark and Lilith had forgotten her wand. The first mistake she had made. She was also slightly cold, since her pajamas didn't provide much warmth, being as when she went with the silky pajamas versus the cotton ones. Goosebumps already were forming on her body. Her legs started to move faster, her body needing the warmth that awaited her up above. Though she knew she was walking faster, her feet hitting the ground harder, everything was louder.
That's when she heard a noise near her and stopped dead in her tracks. A ghost, a prefect, or worse, a teacher, she wasn't sure which. Either way, she was going to be in trouble. Dashing behind a suit of armour, she peeked out in time to see Lucius Malfoy, a very attractive Slytherin, slinking around. She breathed a sigh of relief and poked her head out from behind the armour. "Looking for little ol' me? Not doing a very good job of this hide and seek game, are you?" Lilith teased.

. It was hard to keep quiet in the Dungeons. The way it was set up, what with the stone, shoes and bare feet weren't given much cushion to silence every step. This was also true for the poor Prefects who had to catch the kids sneaking around. It was much easier to get a hold of someone if the person in authority had quiet footsteps on his or her side. That being said, Lucius' shoes weren't helping him in any way. The only thing he might have considered was taking off his shoes and running around in his socks instead. However, seeing as his wand was lit up by Lumos, there was really no point in trying to sneak around. Besides, by now the culprit had to know he or she was about to get caught, and it didn't seem like whoever it was was too concerned by that matter.
The footsteps had stopped probably twenty feet ahead of him, and that was a very good thing. It wouldn't be hard to find the sneak now that he or she had stopped to hide. Lucius was usually fairly good at finding hiding places, especially in his own territory. Had it been closer to the Ravenclaw tower or one of the other House Common Rooms, the person might have had a chance. Perhaps he or she had not seen who it was yet? He couldn't imagine that if he were in the same position he would find himself a hiding place from a Slytherin, let alone a Seventh Year Slytherin with his experience. A smirk brushed his lips as he prepared himself for this hunt of cat and mouse. He raised his wand higher to light up the area a little better and saw a figure step out from behind one of the nights. When she spoke, her voice sounded completely unconcerned.
"Feeling a bit courageous, were you?" he asked her in a snakelike manner. He still hadn't quite figured out who she was, but he was still making his way toward her slowly, eyes zoned in on her in the darkness. She was obviously very attractive, which was always a plus for him when it came to looking for bribes from the victims he had caught on his duties. As he closed in on her, though, he recognised that dark hair and those gorgeous green eyes. "Lilith Rayne. What am I going to do with you?" A crooked smile appeared where the smirk had been, and he let his wand down, patting it over and over in the palm of his hand. His eyes kept locked with hers for a moment before he reached into his pocket to check the time. "You know, my shift was just ending. Had you only waited about twenty more minutes, you may not have been caught."
For the first time during the night, he could feel a little sleeplessness rush over him, and he yawned. After he looked back at Lilith, examining her up and down before leaning a shoulder against the stone wall. "And you're damn lucky I'm the one who found you. Imagine a professor catching you out here, or worse yet, our Head Girl? None of them would be willing to let you off the hook." he stretched a bit in his current position and began flipping his wand with his right hand, over and over. "What is it you're wearing, anyway? Is this outfit supposed to talk your way out of trouble for you?" He shook his head and chuckled.
Lucius and Lilith (it had a nice ring to it, didn't it)had an odd sort of relationship, one that couldn't be considered a friendship, but it the only tension present between them was the sexual bit. To anyone on the outside, it was obvious the feelings each had for the other. Neither wanted commitment, but they both shared one common interest, which was themselves. Of course, neither really had any interest in going after the other, so it was a constant barrage of tension for things left unsaid. It was a very frustrating situation for all involved, including anyone around during their conversations. Fortunately for "anyone," no one was here to witness the goings-on right now.
"So," he breathed carefully, his eyes once again meeting with hers and keeping a steady hold. "The questions still begs to be answered - what am I going to do with you?" He stepped away from the wall now, continuing to hold his gaze with her and he began circling her closely, as a vulture circles its prey for diving in. On the second circle, he stopped in front of her, very close. Another grin let itself loose and he let it slip so far into a smile now. Part of him loved their little game of cat and mouse. It was nice knowing he finally had this little mouse cornered, and she had very few ways out. He was prepared for anything she had to throw it him. Ah, it's so very nice to be a Prefect, he thought to himself. [/blockquote]

Lilith's and Lucius's relationship was always an odd one. People would say they were meant to be together, but sometimes that was so far from the truth. They were the opposite gender's version of each other. If they were so perfect for each other, they were too perfect for each other. Neither had the hand up in the situation, though they truely believed they did. They played this back and forth game with one another, but if it continued, that was as far as it was going to get.
Like Lucius, Lilith came from a very long line of pure blood. Though Lilith hadn't noticed it until she had entered school and met Lucius, they probably had met at family functions before they were even able to walk. In the Rayne parents's eyes, Lucius was probably the perfect male companion for Lilith. In the Malfoy parents's eyes, Lilith was probably the perfect female companion for Lucius as well. Yet even if the two would ever be able to make any sort of move towards a relationship, it would spontaneously combust one of them.
"Well..." Lilith drawled, coming from behind the armour, a smirk playing on her full lips. "I think that's up for you to decide, Mr. Authority." Lilith always found Prefects a joke, but Lucius had always taken his job seriously. By seriously, he made it his job to give as many Gryffindors detentions as he possibly could. Lucius was always confident, but this little badge on his chest made him the more confident. Lilith had to admit, it was a bit of a turn on.
"Professor, Head boy, or any other prefect, I could've been able to talk my way out of anything wearing this." Lilith flashed her silky pajamas that barely reached past her mid-thigh. If there was someone she could talk her way out of something in her current outfit to, it was Lucius. He was a complete tool, which made her attempts so much easier. Yet something told her he wouldn't have turned her in even if she was wearing the cotton pajamas.
"Let's be honest here, Lucius." Lilith said, taking a stride past him, towards her destination. "Either way, you're going to let me go on my way, giving me a warning or something or another. Why don't you just join me and you won't have to worry about my safety, hmm?" Lilith was slowly making her way around Lucius, towards the stairs that led to the Entrance Hall. "I mean, I thought you were a Slytherin afterall or did you forget with that badge and all?" Lilith teased, laughing as she turned towards the staircase.

. It sounded funny to think, let alone say, but the smell of Lilith was in every way as strong as the Dungeon air. Just as piercing to his nose as his eyes surely were on her right now. It was part of the reason he was keeping so close. The castle itself oftentimes smelled a bit musty, especially during the night when it wasn't filled with crowds of students with their own smells. The only place you could guarantee to get away from it was heading to the Owlery, and even then one was left with an unpleasant taste. Owls didn't exactly give off the best scents, what with their droppings and the molting of their wings. Regardless of all of this, Lilith's perfume or whatever it was she was wearing outdid the castle, in every room, and in every way.
"Mister Authority, hm?" he repeated, keeping that shit-eating grin on his face. "I'm not sure... I think since you're the one in trouble here, you should be making the offers..." He watched her as she showed off her thigh and was immediately covered in cold chills that had nothing to do with the temperature of the Dungeon. His grin got even bigger, and it took a lot for him to hold his composure. "Although some of them might be... affected by that outfit of yours, I doubt all of them would be. Some might even be offended. And then let's consider the girls here, too... what makes you think that you couldn't have been caught by one of them? I believe our filthy Head Girl is somewhere in the castle monitoring the corridors." He shuddered at the thought of Lily Evans wandering the same halls he did.
That girl didn't belong in the wizarding world, let alone given the ability to share such close quarters as a Pureblooded wizard like himself. Knowing a lot about the magical world didn't make her blood any cleaner, and it certainly didn't qualify her as a witch by his standards. Though the world viewed it differently... it was a sad thing. During his internal rant, Lilith had slipped around him and was speaking again. He snapped back to reality to listen to every bit of liquid poison she had to offer him. "Why don't you just join me and you won't have to worry about my safety, hmm?" she had said. She was tossing him a very tempting offer, one that, as a member of the male species, could not refuse. He had instinctively started following her up the stairs.
"I'm not just any Slytherin, Lilith," he began to brag, "You should know that. I may be a figure of authority, but it doesn't take the mischievous side away... it just gives me more room to use it." He moved a head of her on the stairs and got to the Entrance Hall before her, looking around for any of his fellow Prefects or anything even higher than that. His shift was still technically on, and so he hadn't expected anyone, though sometimes the Professors liked to check on the students to be sure they were using their authority correctly. Or maybe it was just that Professors checked on the Slytherins, namely Lucius. It seemed like every shift he had, a Professor had popped up mysteriously at one point or another. Tonight it had been much earlier, and that was going to work in his favour, seeing as he now had a companion with him. If all else failed, he could claim her as his "prisoner" he was taking back to the Common Room.
He didn't look back to be sure she was following. If she wasn't, he knew where she slept, so there wasn't much to worry about. He walked on toward the Slytherin House points and looked at it, seeing his reflection in the glass. Points hadn't been assigned yet, as it was still so early in the year, but hopefully they would win it this year. It would be a nice change to the norm every other year, especially with this being his last. He turned around after these thoughts to turn his attention back to Lilith.
